What an iPhone IMEI check tells you

The IMEI is the hardware identity of the phone. It is printed in Settings, engraved on many SIM trays and stored in Apple's and the carriers' systems, so it cannot be changed the way a listing title can.

  • Exact model and variant, decoded from the first eight digits (the TAC). A listing that says iPhone 15 Pro while the IMEI belongs to an iPhone 13 is a red flag.
  • Find My / Activation Lock status read live. If it is on, the phone is still tied to someone's Apple Account and cannot be set up by you.
  • Apple coverage, checked by serial number: limited warranty or AppleCare, estimated purchase date and open repairs. The report links straight to it.
  • Radio bands, so you know whether an imported iPhone supports the 4G and 5G bands your carrier uses.

Why Find My matters more than anything else

Activation Lock is Apple's anti-theft feature. After a reset, an iPhone with Find My on asks for the previous owner's Apple Account password. Without it, the phone cannot be activated, and Apple only removes the lock for the original owner with proof of purchase.

A seller who is honest can turn Find My off in a minute: Settings › [name] › Find My, or remotely at icloud.com by removing the device from their account. Run the check again afterwards; the status on IMEI.si is read at the moment you check, not from a stale copy.

US, EU or international iPhone?

From the iPhone 14 generation onward, models sold in the United States have no SIM tray and work with eSIM only. EU and most international models keep a nano-SIM slot alongside eSIM. The model identifier and band list in the report help you tell them apart, but the quickest physical check is still the side of the phone: no tray means a US eSIM-only unit.

How to run the check

  1. Dial *#06# on the iPhone, or open Settings › General › About and scroll to IMEI.
  2. Type or paste the 15 digits into the field above. The check digit is validated as you type.
  3. Read the report and ask the assistant anything that is unclear.

Frequently asked questions

Is the iPhone IMEI check really free?

Yes. The full report and the assistant are free and need no account. Each visitor can check a handful of different IMEIs per day; repeat checks of the same IMEI do not count.

Why is Apple warranty checked by serial number?

Apple's coverage records are keyed to the serial number, not the IMEI. The iPhone report links to the warranty check; the serial is in Settings › General › About.

Can an IMEI check show if an iPhone is stolen?

Find My being on is the strongest signal available from the IMEI: a stolen iPhone almost always still has it on. A GSMA blacklist lookup is on the IMEI.si roadmap.
